ETTO- English Teacher Training Online
British Council Azerbaijan had a new online teacher development course ETTO (English Teacher Training Online) in February - April 2010. This 50 hour long innovative course included online work with the requirement to complete tasks and discuss topics with other participants and self study. Self study included assignments, lesson planning and reflection on your lessons.

All the activities, tasks, videos and audio files are designed to teach young learners aged 5-12. There are 6 modules with various live classroom videos demonstrating the techniques being used. Selected participants were assigned an online tutor who supported them throughout the course.

Module 1 Introduction

Learning online is not quite the same as working face-to-face, this module equipped the participants with all the information and guidance they needed for their new online journey

Module 2 First steps in teaching children

This module looked at a variety of factors that contribute towards the way children learn

Module 3 Songs and games

Songs and games have always held a unique place in children's learning. This module explored why this is so and looked at how to use songs and games effectively in your classrooms

Module 4 Learning styles

This module explored differences between learners and considered different learning styles

Module 5 Syllabus and lesson planning

The syllabus gives us an outline of the work that must be covered for the year. In this module different approaches and methods were looked at that could be followed after the course.

Module 6 Classroom management

This module covered a range of skills for organising the participants' time, the learning environment and the learners themselves
The online course also included the below sections:
• The reflective journal - the participants' own diary space.
• Plenary Forum- to discuss any pedagogic issues or questions that the participants had during their study.
• Technical forum- to support the participants with troubleshooting
• Social Forum- to talk about anything with their colleagues.

The participants were given Certificates of Accomplishment at the end of the course.

Essential requirement for participants was a good knowledge of computer skills and a reliable internet connection.

The course was designed by the British Council Turkey and is widely used in Turkey.
