5th South Caucasus ELT Conference
22 AzETA members attended 5th South Caucasus English Language Teachers’ Conference: New Educational Horizons in English Language Teaching held on 15-17 May 2009 in Gudauri, Georgia with the financial support of the US State Department and the British Council South Caucasus.



The aim of the Conference was to enable the teachers from 3 South Caucasus countries to come together, share experiences and exchange views on different ELT issues.

14 AzETA members gave presentations on different topics related to ELT, including Teacher Development through Project Work, Youth Development through ELT, Using art to teach English, Teaching young learners songs and storytelling, Ice breakers and warm up activities, Taxonomy of questions to reading, etc.



AzETA gave priority to its members from different regions to join the conference.

In the opening ceremony of the Conference Ragsana Mammadova, AzETA Executive Director thanked the organisers and sponsors of the Conference, highlighted the importance of such conferences for regional co-operation and expressed her hope that these conference would be sustainable as they had a lot of impact on personal and professional development of the members of the Teachers' Associations.



The participants had a chance to listen to the plenary talks by:

1. Sean Connley:, USA (Tapping the power of the web for English Language Teaching)
2. Jennifer M. Herrin, USA (Breaking bad habits without breaking spirits)
3. Susan Sheehan, UK (The International Language Assessment: developing a new placement test for the British Council)

At the end of Day 2 of the Conference there was a raffle. The English Book in Georgia and CAC Books made a generous donation towards the raffle as a result of which every single participant got a prize. Besides, Ubut company of the USA made a generous donation to the Teachers' Associations of the South Caucasus and gave a laptop to each association.

Besides the interesting conference programme, the scenary outside the conference venue was also very nice.

AzETA acknowledges the conference organisors and donors for the opportunity to empower its members personally and professionally.
